The 555 hp twin-turbo V8... 315s in the rear... cheaper than a base model Mini Countryman even after spending $2,000 on new tires all around... My friend, you just made it to my list! These were $85,000 brand new back around 2010 and now it takes $62,000 just to consider a 2019 X5 xDrive40i and another $40,000 to grab the final iteration of this generation ///Monster.

I see the non-M version of early X5s going for sub $3k on my local CL fairly often. This does not bode well.

J ust be prepared for potentially expensive repairs. It should come as no surprise to someone that a low production car with a lot of power and a big MSRP may have unique parts that are anything but cheap.

If you come to the table knowing this, then you should be good to go.

I still very much find myself tempted by such animals. I've been into the X5M since they first came out - though I still have trouble justifying one for myself. If only I could convince my SO that she get one for herself.

My local BMW Indy shop, I asked him the car he doesn’t like to work on the most. I thought he would say BMW 7-series, he said X5 or anything with a modern turbo. This one has both.

If you can afford the car and have quite a bit left over for issues and repairs, then do it.

But there is a reason why these things have become so cheap.

All of these that I see look to be on their 3rd+ owner and scream deferred maintenance and questionable accident repair. And i alre ady know that the early X5s rattle like motherfuckers . I rate it NFW at any price.

An X5M with a backlog of dealer service is an amazing performance SUV. But only if it has the service booklet.

My grandfather has that generation X5 and it has never given us any trouble. I think the biggest issues with BMW reliability isn’t that the cars are made badly, it’s that BMW charges too much money for maintenance, their tooling and replacement parts are very expensive, and sometimes people don’t want to see that. so they don’t do it.

Then there’s the wrongful impression that as a car gets older, the maintenance can be done with less care, if anything the case is the contrary.

It terrifies me in general that so many sub-decade-old cars have had more than 2 owners. Or in the case of an M car, I would all but expect it to be an original owner. Anything else is just being passed around among suckers.

YMMV

There’s no such thing as a cheap high performance German luxury car. You’re paying for it either up front or later.

I live next to one of the wealthiest suburbs of Chicago, and it’s interesting to look at what people drive — and don’t drive. Current generation X5s are everywhere- but even the previous generation is virtually nonexistent. Yet it’s common to see older BMW sedans - the E60 is still a relatively common sight, and E39s aren’t fast unusual either.  O lder MBs are like a badge of honor.

I * really* think everyone is leasing the X5, including the M. So they get passed down quickly, and even 2nd owners aren’t keeping them more then 2- 3 years.

Most BMWs ar e gonna have at least two owners within the first three years on account of leases.

And the fact that the parts are still priced based on the original MSRP of the vehicle.

-says a nearly 10 year old S8 owner.

I can see why they end up scrapped so early.  It doesn’t take long to rack up a repair bill that outpaces the vehicle value.  But as long as you’re prepared and you have good records, you can get a lot for you’re money.  And you can get a good education in how the cars are put together....  because you’ll be taking them apart soon enough to fix something.

You do NOT want those early TTV8s that the M5, M6,  X5, X6 had. The revisions made throughout the generation are much better and make it livable.
